F-I-V-E!

What a year it has been for this little man! The changes I have seen over the past 12 months are remarkable. Luke is becoming a boy. Not a toddler but a full fledged boy. 347 questions each day, inquistive, helpful, loving, and full of energy. His tender heart shows all its colors when he takes care of James and his eye's get teary at the thought of hurting another. He is sensitive and sweet, this boy aims to please.

This year he wanted a birthday party, so a birthday party we had! We had lots of giggling boys and girls to help us celebrate and best of all, Grams and Pax were here. It was an obstacle challenge party in our backyard-  the sticky cotton ball game.....

dangling donuts.......

squirting guns......balloon races and a pinata......

Happy 5th Birhday my Lukester!

Bad things come in 3's.

So, it all hit at once.

1. The stomach bug- three kiddos over 5 days and one trip to the ER while Matt was out of town. Sleepless night full of worry, countless loads of laundry, lots of time spent disinfecting. Luckily (or unluckily) I got it the day after he got home. At least I was able to lock myself in our room and rest for a quick recovery.

2. A dog bite. I take pilates classes at an in home studio where the instructor allows her dog to stay while we work out. He is a rescued, albino, mostly blind and mostly deaf great dane. About 180 lbs and big. Normally he is gentle and just lays quietly on the ground next to my machine. This particular morning, as I went to pull my ponytail from behind my head he took my neck in his mouth and bit me. Luckily (or unluckily) if he had wanted to really hurt me he could have and all I got was this-
which warranted a round of antibiotics and some apprehension about dogs.

3. All others pale in comparison to when my mom called to tell me her doctor had found a polyp on her colon during her last colonoscopy. Colon cancer runs in our family with my aunt passing away at a young age with it. My mother gets checked every two years so as optimistic as we all wanted to be it rang too close to our hearts. The next procedure brought stress as the doctor never followed up and a nurse ended up telling my mother, on the phone, she had colon cancer and the doctor would call her soon. Turns out the sample had to be sent for a second opinion which resulted in laparoscopic surgery to remove it. All in all, luckily (or unluckily), we are as thankful as ever it was PREcancerous, is now removed and my mother is recovering. We are counting our blessings and sending sweet prayers to my momma.
Hoping the next several months are uneventful.

We love it!

We were all thrilled when Aunt Dana and Gino made the trek to Colorado for a visit, the only missing piece was Uncle Sammy (next time, we hope!) To say that Luke and Eli were excited was an understatement, they were beyond thrilled. And James actually let someone hold him, it was like I was on vacation! The boys showed off their mad gymnastic's skills at Little Gym, the big boys headed up to Copper Mountain for some skiing and sledding, there were S'mores (of course) and Minute to Win It. Aunt Dana even broke down and spent an afternoon playing Mad Scientists with Luke and his experiment kit.

If you ask Luke about his Aunt Dana he says, "She is smiley and always funny. She says, "I hope you eat all your dinner so I don't call the dupa police." And Gino has grown into such a handsome and caring young man. When most college kids would prefer to be out cruising the town, Gino is right at home reading books to these little guys. Their hearts were overflowing with love and eyes were filled with tears when we all had to hug good bye. These memories will be etched in their little hearts forever.

The thumb.

All this kid needs is a sleep sack and his thumb.

A lot to be thankful for!

This year we have so much to be thankful for~ health, a thriving and giggling new baby, moving into our home and family. We were lucky enough that Matt's parents agreed to come for a visit and help us celebrate.

A train ride is a must!

Decking the Christmas tree.

Pax and sweet Baby James.

Grams and Pax tried their first Smore.

Grams and I cooked up a mean Thanksgiving dinner. Everyone participated in a cookie decorating contest and Minute To Win It game. The ten days went by too fast. Our hearts are full of love and are cheeks hurt from all of the laughs.

Florida Smiles.

The Gang!

We were thrilled that Matt's parents (Grams and Pax) and Matt's nephew, Gino, were able to come out for a visit this summer. They all live in Spring Hill, Florida and are missed dearly. The night before they arrived Luke could not sleep and came out if his room and asked, "Are lots of hugs and kisses coming my way?" Oh, they sure did!

The week was action packed- a trip to the Alpine Slides and a follow up trip to ride the roller coaster, bumper boats and amusement park rides. (This reminded both Matt and I how we can't do spinning rides- ugh.) We also fit in lots of time on the porch with the boys praciticing golf and baseball, a movie night, a morning at the splash park and Clement Park, miniature golf, a baseball game (kind of as Luke got sick), and hiking. Lots of wildlife popped up too- deer, elk, a rattlesnake and bunnies, welcome to Colorado!

It was a time we will always cherish with so many wonderful memories and laughs. We are so thankful they all made the journey so we could spend this time together.

The boys were spoiled rotten. This helmet and jersey are now a prized possession.

Oh how James loves Gram's arms!

Riding the slides. Luke wanted to ride with Gino because he knows the heavier the weight in the sled the faster you go!

We love and miss you all!

Summer Lovin'

So my little sister, Jamie, got married June 19th. We now share the same wedding day and I was so thrilled to be part of her wedding. She had a vision- mountain cabins, vintage feel, an abundance of flowers and lots of love.

My sister and brother, Jamie and Travis. Twins!

Our whole family rallied together the day of the wedding to transform the grounds of this cabin retreat. It was beautiful already but throw in glass vases filled with peonies and wildflowers, photographs hung from twine twisting down wooden poles, haystacks covered with bright blue, purple and yellow fabric, picnic tables adorned with homemade napkins, colorful plates and delicious organic food, and key lime pie flown in from Florida. Oh perfection!

Jamie looked beautiful! Gasp worthy. The weather held out through the ceremony and dinner. The skies then opened and poured down rain, good luck ya know.

Lily and Marley are the sweetest girls and looked just beautiful. So sweet.

Jamie dancing with our most amazing father.

All smiles.

Oh and Luke caught the garter. Everyone cheered and he stood there stunned. He decided it was best suited as a headband.

It was lovely. Exquisite in every way. Congratulations Jamie and Jex!!

Goodbye 3, HELLO 4!

This was Luke's favorite saying on his 4th Birthday! So hard to believe it is here. I am a bit reminiscent with the baby coming and all but can this sweet, little boy already be 4, truly! I can not believe it.

For his birthday he received a two wheel bike. Let me tell you- the kid was up and riding the same day he got it! The trick- the Skuut. He mastered balancing on the Skuut and after 15 minutes of learning to pedal with training wheels we took them off and there he went. We are still learning to break but the little dare devil sees no reason to slow down. He and Matt have done a few "trails" around here- small dirt paths- and he rings that bell like it is nobodies business. All he wants to do is RIDE!

We also celebrated by inviting his best bud, Dylan, to Chuck E Cheese and then hitting up Tokyo Joes afterward for lunch and cake.

I love watching his personality develop. He is inquisitive and asks questions all day long. His sense of humor will make me smile most any day. During his 4 year check up at the doctor the nurse was doing his eye exam. She was at the last line of pictures that were extremely small, wanting to know what the object was. Luke replied with, "Excuse me but do you think you can move that a bit closer so I can take a look." She and I both busted out laughing. He loves to rough house with Eli, never missing an opportunity to get a jab or elbow in but will always follow up with a kiss to a boo boo. His memory is amazing and providing details to stories is his forte.

Happy Birthday sweet Luke. I know I tell you every night but I thank God each and every day for giving me such a wonderful and amazing son!!

The Big Day!

Not ready just yet for the baby but we had another BIG DAY! Matt's niece, Samantha, got married in Florida.....what a day (actually week) to remember. Matt's family flew in from California and Pittsburgh and we hadn't seen so many of them in years, it was a treat. Lucky for us, the wedding was held April 2nd with my last allowable day to fly being the 3rd- just in time!

Just like all weddings they had their fair share of the unexpected- the limo got in an accident the day before and they had to find a new company, the photographer had a family emergency and needed to be replaced but the day could not have turned out any better. Tears of joy from a beautiful ceremony, swells of pride as Luke walked down the aisle as the "ring barrier" and sweat from dancing the night away (with plenty of braxton hicks contractions to remind me to tone it down) made it a day to remember.

Luke LOVES his Aunt Dana!

Ready to make his appearance.

Grams and Pax.

Eli would not leave the dance floor. The boy has rhythm and a killer smile- such a little heart breaker. He also loves to give "tisses" and was more than willing to smooch the pretty ladies.
Dad and his boys!

Congratulations to Samantha and Josh, cheers to many years of love and happiness!

Natural child birth- Part 2.

Amazing describes this so accurately because I could have never imagined Matt and I going down this path. First of all, I have a very low pain tolerance. I actually passed out when I got my ear pierced when I was young. I cried if I stubbed my toe. And secondly, I never understood why anyone would chance not having their baby at a hospital? Our journey truly began three years earlier when I was about 20 weeks pregnant and expecting Luke. Matt and I were thrilled and sat in our hospital mandated New Parent's Education Class. We had found an OB/GYN in the area and she was nice enough. Not exactly warm or friendly but very experienced. We had started our rotations at her practice and found some of the drs were wonderful and others left so much to be desired. We were new to this whole thing, why would we question it. But that Saturday class our views began to shift. Our instructor began to go through the section regarding what to expect in labor and delivery. As an employee of the hospital I was amazed that she was so open and keen on the idea of really deciding what you want out of your delivery. What matters most to you as a family, mother and to your newborn. She recited the C section statistics of the various hospitals, why drs encourage scheduled inductions, etc. I was shocked, upset and scared. I left that day feeling utterly sick and disgusted. I did not even know what I wanted, how could I have overlooked so much. Then the research began. I developed a birthing plan and discussed it with OB/GYN at our next visit. She listened to me, made a note in my chart and that was that. Easy enough I thought. Hmm. Okay. I decided shortly after that, I wanted a natural child birth. Matt and I took a crash course in HypnoBirthing and I read as much as I could and did all of the exercises. I was ready and very excited! Three weeks later, 2am my water breaks. I called my OB/GYN and let her know what had happened. Granted it was early in the morning but her response was, "Great I will get the pitocin started." Why, my water had broken? Remember I want to do a natural birth. Her reply was, "We will see once you are at the hospital." Strike 1. I get to the hospital, I had baked cookies for the staff, they were very welcoming and encouraging. It was a fairly slow night and I was able to get the big suite with the tub. Labor started progressing and three years later it is funny what you remember. The nurse had trouble getting the IV in my arm. I easily dehydrate and my veins were already so small, for weeks my arms were lined with bruises at those futile attempts. Two nurses later I was finally getting fluids. My sister showed up and so sweetly brought breakfast. I was not allowed to have food, uggh and Matt was starving.....he had an everything bagel with cream cheese and coffee. Oh that smell will haunt me forever. The pain had gotten so strong and my senses must have been at their peek because I could smell that wretched scent across the room and almost threw up. I would walk back and forth between the bed, bathroom and tub, attached to an IV. It was 10:30am, the nurse checked me. 4 centimeters dilated. I could barely breathe through the contractions, I was sweating and then getting cold. 15 minutes passed and I looked at Matt. We had truly wanted a natural birth and I was prepared for it but I could not make it. I could not handle it. I looked at him and said, "I think I need the epidural." With no hesitation, he took my hand and called the nurse in to tell her. I felt so defeated. What came next, changed the course of my experience. The nurse looked at me and said so matter of factly, "You are doing so well. I need to check you again." I am so grateful I had a nurse that knew her job and what to look for. Looked at each patient and their wants rather than what was easiest for her. She checked me, I was 9cm. I remember her smile and she said, "No wonder, you are ready to have this baby. I can get the epidural but I know you want a natural birth and I think you can do this." I asked her how much longer it would be and she, obviously, did not know. She called my dr and a few minutes later I had the urge to push. Where was the dr.? 15, 20, 30 minutes past....no sign of the dr and the office was just next door. Strike 2. The heart rate dropped I was on all fours and so scared and tired. Stop pushing they shouted. Stop pushing, really? I could not. My sister held my hand, Matt ran out into the hall and grabbed a nurse and in a few choice words asked, "Where is the dr?" I know now at about this time Grams and Pax had arrived and were hoping to see us but were told the baby was almost here. I remember the OB/GYN arriving, arrogant but ready to deliver. Luke was coming now, sunny side up. No wonder the pain was so excruciating. The cord was caught around his neck but his heart rate stayed strong. At 12:30pm on April 17, 2007 Luke Stephen arrived at 6 pounds 11 ounces. Jamie was such a trooper, she had not expected to be there for the delivery and left a few minutes after. She told me it was an experience and had to go lay down. I recovered in the hospital for the next several days, proud of what I had accomplished, excited about our new family.

Fast forward, 15 months and we find out we are pregnant! We went back to the same OB practice we had gone to before but saw a different dr. Dr. Bray was wonderful- friendly, caring, relatable. Funny how you tend to forget the negative things that happen to you but as I started rotating through the practice it all came back. Coincidentally, I got a prenatal massage from a good friend of mine, Rochelle. She was pregnant and had just decided to have a natural birth at a birthing center. We discussed the idea and I was intrigued. A place that is supportive of natural child birth, midwives that are extensively trained and knowledgeable and partner with the mother through the process. I was not sure how I felt about this idea. I watched a documentary called, "The Business of Being Born," and began reading books, "Birthing from Within" by Ina May Gaskin.......Matt and I started having conversations and decided to visit the center. This is where I wanted to have my baby. It was a family environment- Luke was encouraged to come and help listen to the baby's heart beat. They wanted to know about me, about our family, about what I had envisioned for my birth. My appointments were never rushed or hurried. They encouraged me to call with any questions. I did and actually spoke with a midwife at any hour of the day. I began my training for the natural birth as well. I call it training because it was to me. I have found the power of the mind to do miraculous things. I began to visualize how I wanted my birth to be, what it would feel like, how labor would progress. There is no doubt that this preparation allowed for such an 'easy' delivery.

Natural child birth has been one of the most miraculous experiences of my life. There are so many things we work and labor for in life but the joy of giving life to a child can not be compared. Natural child birth is not for everyone. Doctors are highly specialized and trained in high risk or emergency situations. Their training is crucial and know how is extremely important during these deliveries but for me, a low risk patient I have found these two experiences empowered me to be a better mother. I, intuitively, understand myself and my capabilities better.

So with all of this, we are getting ready for another little guy to join our family. We have found an amazing doula, Jacie, and will be delivering at Mountain Midwifery Birthing Center. I am excited to prepare for this next wonderful experience.

Someone Like You.

I've been searching a long time
For someone exactly like you
I've been travelling all around the world
Waiting for you to come through.
Someone like you makes it
All worth while
Someone like you keeps
Me satisfied. Someone exactly
Like you.

I've been travellin' a hard road
Lookin' for someone exactly like you
I've been carryin' my heavy load
Waiting for the light to come
Shining through.
Someone like you makes it
All worth while
Someone like you keeps
Me satisfied. Someone exactly
Like you.

I've been doin' some soul searching
To find out where you're at
I've been up and down the highway
In all kinds of foreign lands
Someone like you... etc.

I've been all around the world
Marching to the beat of a different
Drum.
But just lately I have
Realized
The best is yet to come. - Van Morrison

These were the words Matt and I danced to at our wedding. As I hear this song, it amazes me that God's grace continues to shine down on us with such truth and wisdom. To know that in the struggle, He has a plan. A plan for me.

It was two weeks before Matt and I were to be married. He had been doing some soul searching, some deep and heavy stuff. Reading his Bible at the park, trying to find his place in this world. I was working my job as a pharmaceutical rep and busy as a bee planning the weeding. His life had been consumed by this book and while I knew my love for God, I was in what I remember to be a transition period. I knew that my heart did not sit with the Catholic faith as I had been raised and I was not sure where that left me. And while we had all the "necessary" discussions about money, religion, kids where did his changing leave us? We sat down and tearfully told him that I was not sure I would ever be the Sunday school/teacher/wife, stay at home mom, Bible searching women. Maybe that was what he needed, maybe that was what he wanted. What if I could not give him that? I told him to please think about it, think hard, and let me know. Without a moment of hesitation, he looked at me, grabbed me, and held me. He told me, "You are what I want. Whatever God has in his plans for us is what I want."

Looking back, this truly set the tone for our marriage. For him to have trusted Him. Matt has changed, I have changed (thank goodness!). To have thought I loved him that day we wed, pales in comparison to the devotion and admiration I have for him today. He is the father every child deserves and the husband every woman dreams for. He fights fair and loves deeply. We don't have the perfect marriage or perfect kids but we have a commitment to one and another and our amazing children that makes this life ten shades brighter than I ever thought it would be. Matt, I can never thank you enough. My love forever.

Getting bigger and bigger- 20 weeks with baby #3.

A Florida Christmas- Part 3.

After Disney, we headed over to my parent's house to spend a few days in Ponce Inlet. Boy oh boy was it cold. This year we had two more kiddos added to the bunch was so wonderful! Lily and Marley are so sweet and kind, the boys immediately took to them.

Everyone trying to have a mustache as cool as Pops!

Perfecting his skills!

Where's the beach?

Hockey studs.

Luke does not look happy at all :)

This is picture is such a wonderful depiction of my mother. Her heart is huge, her smile big and her love, boundless!

Grateful Little Elf.

This year we received the "Elf on a Shelf" from Matt's, very generous, Aunt Sandy and Uncle Rudy. We decided to change it up a bit though and soon the "Grateful Little Elf", a new Klasnick family tradition arrived.

Most every day in December the boys would wake up and search for the Elf. As Eli is getting older, they are becoming more competitive.

Once found, Luke would spell out the letters on the clue and sound out the word. The word was always a reminder of something to be grateful for. Once we figured out the word Luke would hang it on our grateful collage and we would come up with a pay it forward type idea for the day. The whole concept centered around the fact that we would help someone that did not have what we were grateful for.

To watch Luke's heart open and his mind come up with ways we could help others was touching. His generosity, foresight and kindness amazed me. For our December to be focused on others and not ourselves was the most wonderful of gifts received.

One trip found us at the neighborhood assisted living center. Luke and Eli arrived with bells on their necks, a smile on their face and candy canes for all of the "grandmas and grandpas." Eli, of course, stayed in momma's arms but I witnessed Luke venturing out~ dancing, carrying on conversations with adults, asking questions and showing his love. The kid landed so many red lipstick kisses he could have been a Revlon model.

The educational aspect of this new tradition was a bonus. The Gathering Place is a day shelter for homeless mothers. Together with Luke's best friend, Dylan, the boy's read through a list of the most needed items at the shelter. The boys were given a budget and taken to the store to make their purchases. They then delivered the items. Reading, math, and lots of fun filled this day.

Although, looking back the most impactful were the discussions that opened up about the way we live. For Luke to realize that not all children wake up in a warm home and open the refrigerator to choose what they want to eat. For some little boys to not have a father to show them love and encouragement or know that there is a God that loves them. For all of these things, and so many more we are so very grateful.

Parade of Lights.

Saturday night we packed up and headed downtown for the night. We stayed in a hotel, ate yummy pizza and tried to brave the cold to see the boys first parade- The Parade of Lights. We met the Kessler family, my cousin, Callie, and (almost) the Howard family. A mere 30 degrees and lots of people made it very interesting! Poor Eli did not even make it for the beginning of the parade. The only thing to keep him from crying were the horse drawn carriages we could see every now and again. Luckily, our hotel room looked out over the street so Eli and I enjoyed a warm, bird's eye view of the show while Matt and Luke had front row seats in the street below!

The next morning we went out for crepes (a new Luke and Eli favorite) and rode the shuttle bus up and down the 16t street mall. It was a fun little getaway!
